Our Products

Bricks, brick slips and frogged bricks

Our carbon-negative products enable clients to achieve net-zero by absorbing and storing carbon dioxide from the air throughout their entire lifecycle.

We manufacture a range of five types of low-carbon and carbon-negative bricks, to suit different requirements and budgets. Please see our brochures for full product listings and technical data.

Our superior, innovative binder

As with most traditional binders, ours is lime-based. Lime is typically produced by heating limestone at temperatures of around 900C. Traditional production generates CO2 emissions from both the breakdown of the raw materials and the fossil fuels needed to achieve the high temperatures required. We have developed a unique lime production process that can be done at room temperature. All of the carbon produced during the manufacture of the e4E binder is also permanently stored in a solid form, rather than being released into the atmosphere as CO2.

Benefits

Upcycled local soil, not landfill

We upcycle waste excavated soil, a by-product of construction sites that would end up in landfill, into our carbon-negative earth bricks. In the UK only, construction and demolition activities generate over 50 million tonnes of waste soil each year.

We intercept suitable local soils, then screen, condition and treat them to create a consistent feedstock for brickmaking, supporting a genuinely circular approach to construction.

Compressed, rather than fired

We avoid the carbon-intensive kiln firing process. This alone cuts more than half of the carbon emissions of traditional clay brickmaking.

Outstanding performance

Our bricks offer up to 40 MPa compressive strength, are water and frost-resistant and have excellent durability (F2). They are UKCA and CE certified, and are routinely tested against a wide range of British and European standards.

100% recyclable

At end of life, our bricks can be crushed and used in new bricks, or returned to the earth. The crushed brick is compatible with the growth of a variety of crops. When the brick is crushed, the captured CO2 is NOT released back to the atmosphere, as it has been chemically bound in a stable mineral form (calcium carbonate, the same constituent material of natural pearls and corals, eggshells, seashells, chalk, marble and limestone, etc.) As a result, the carbon storage is permanent.

Better-than-zero net carbon

Thanks to our patented novel binder production and CO2 Direct Air Capture, we are able to manufacture bricks that have Zero or negative related CO2 emissions.

Once used in a building, our bricks absorb carbon (atmospheric CO2) throughout their service life. Absorption is very fast at early ages and slows down over time, but it will continue until the brick is saturated, i.e. fully carbonated.

The rate at which CO2 is absorbed in the brick depends on many factors such as environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, whether it is indoor or outdoors), presence of a plaster or paint layer, and the amount of carbon-capturing binder present in the brick (we have a range of five carbon absorbencies available).

Once the CO2 is absorbed, it reacts with the binder present in the bricks and crystallises as a stable, insoluble mineral, therefore the carbon is permanently stored, even if the brick is mechanically broken down or pulverised (for example in the event of a demolition).
